چکیده

In motor imagery-based Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI), discriminative patterns can be extracted from the electroencephalogram (EEG) using the Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) algorithm. However, the performance of this spatial filter depends on the operational frequency band of the EEG. Thus, setting a broad frequency range, or manually selecting a subject-specific frequency range, are commonly used with the CSP algorithm. To address this problem, this paper proposes a novel Filter Bank Common Spatial Pattern (FBCSP) to perform autonomous selection of key temporalspatial discriminative EEG characteristics. After the EEG measurements have been bandpass-filtered into multiple frequency bands, CSP features are extracted from each of these bands. A feature selection algorithm is then used to automatically select discriminative pairs of frequency bands and corresponding CSP features. A classification algorithm is subsequently used to classify the CSP features. A study is conducted to assess the performance of a selection of feature selection and classification algorithms for use with the FBCSP. Extensive experimental results are presented on a publicly available dataset as well as data collected from healthy subjects and unilaterally paralyzed stroke patients. The results show that FBCSP, using a particular combination feature selection and classification algorithm, yields relatively higher crossvalidation accuracies compared to prevailing approaches.

Design of IIR Digital Filter using Modified Chaotic Orthogonal Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (RESEARCH NOTE)

There are two types of digital filters including Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) and Finite Impulse Response (FIR). IIR filters attract more attention as they can decrease the filter order significantly compared to FIR filters. Owing to multi-modal error surface, simple powerful optimization techniques should be utilized in designing IIR digital filters to avoid local minimum. Imperialist compe...

A Tutorial on Multiplierless Design of FIR Filters: Algorithms and Architectures

Finite impulse response (FIR) filtering is a ubiquitous operation in digital signal processing systems and is generally implemented in full custom circuits due to high-speed and low-power design requirements. The complexity of an FIR filter is dominated by the multiplication of a large number of filter coefficients by the filter input or its time-shifted versions. Over the years, many high-leve...

Interference Mitigation of Replay Attacks in GPS Receiver using of Finite Impulse Response Filter

The vulnerability of civil GPS receiver to interference may be intentional or unintentional. Among all types of interference, replay attack intended as the most dangerous intentional one. The signal structure of replay attack is almost the same with the satellite signal. The interference effects can be reduce with the design of an appropriate filter in the receiver. This paper presents two meth...

Potential of Particle Swarm Optimization and Genetic Algorithms for FIR Filter Design

This article studies the performance of two metaheuristics, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithms (GA), for FIR filter design. The two approaches aim to find a solution to a given objective function but employ different strategies and computational effort to do so. PSO is a more recent heuristic search method than GA; its dynamics exploit the collaborative behavior of biologi...

Two Novel Implementations of the Remez Multiple Exchange Algorithm for Optimum FIR Filter Design

One of the main advantages of the linear-phase FIR filters over their IIR counterparts is the fact that there exist efficient algorithms for optimizing the arbitrary-magnitude FIR filters in the minimax sense. In case of IIR filters, the design of arbitrary-magnitude filters is usually time-consuming and the convergence to the optimum solution is not always guaranteed. The most efficient method...
